Clipper Ships

An unique American innovation of the 1840s, the Clipper Ship was a sleek, graceful sailing ship, designed to carry small but valuable cargo over long distances and at fast speeds. At the point of their development in history, the overland route across North America was just beginning its competition with the shipping industry, to be given impetus a short time later by the California gold rush. A faster class of ship was just what the shipping industry needed to compete in transporting
gold-seekers and supplies west, as well as in bring Chinese tea and other goods, east, and soon shipyards in the US and in the United Kingdom were building them in abundance.

Characteristics of the Clipper Ship also included a large expanse of sail, usually square, on three tall masts, streamlined hulls, and sharp, projecting bows. The fast, modern ships shattered speed records, tripling long standing records of 150 nautical miles per day. The

advent of the steam vessel and ultimately the opening of the Suez Canal, and new designs, especially those developed by the British, led to a new type of clipper, which meant the end of the era of the original Clipper Ship in world commerce.

The romance and intrigue of the Clipper Ship era remains a passion for many people, and what better way to both remember and promote interest in these majestic vessels, than with
